Figs are delicious summer fruits and have been known since ancient times for their properties and virtues. The plant can reach a considerable height of eight metres and there are two main types of fig trees: those that produce the fioroni figs that ripen at the beginning of spring or at latest, at the end of summer and the other which produces the so-called normal figs that ripen at the end of summer. Figs are cultivated in many countries, but mainly in: the United States, Greece, Turkey, Spain and Portugal. There are numerous fig varieties, almost 150, and they differentiate by their size and colour, which may be green, brown, purple or black. The most popular and marketed are the green and black varieties.
